1. Wash your hands, often.
No matter where you go, bacteria is everywhere, and anything you touch can be dirty. Simple soap and water is the most effective solution to protect yourself from any germs, especially before eating. If you find yourself out-and-about with no frequent access to a sink, carry a mini bottle of hand sanitizer as a back-up.

2. Drink bottled water.
We are fortunate enough to have access to clean drinking water from the tap, however, this isn’t true everywhere. Stick to bottled water, or water that has been purified. Also, remember to stay hydrated and drink water often, especially if you’re in the sun for long periods of time.
3. Get some sleep.
We know you want to enjoy every moment of your vacation, but in order to stay healthy, your immune system needs sleep. If you are lacking it, you may have trouble fighting common infections.
4. Protect yourself from the sun.
Not only does a sunburn hurt, it also does damage to your skin and increases your chances of getting skin cancer. Try to stay in shaded areas, apply waterproof sunscreen all over your face and body, and re-apply every few hours as needed.
5. Use insect repellant.
On top of leaving itchy bites, mosquitoes and other bugs can also carry diseases like dengue fever, malaria and the Zika virus. 6. Get vaccinated.
It’s important to make an appointment with your doctor before you leave and advise them of where you’re travelling so they can vaccinate you for any foreign-specific illnesses. Some countries may have different diseases that you could be susceptible to while travelling.
7. Be cautious of what you eat.
The Government of Canada stands by the saying “Boil it, cook it, peel it or leave it!” Don’t consume any food unless you know that it has been cooked thoroughly, and is still hot when served. Be wary of uncooked foods, such as salads and shellfish, as well as foods from street vendors.
8. Wear shoes.
Sand and soil naturally has bacteria in it and can cause an infection should you have an open wound like a blister on your foot. Wear shoes at all times.
9. Pack a travel health kit.
A good travel health kit should include Band-Aids, rubbing alcohol, anti-nausea medication and sunscreen. If possible, pack your health kit in your carry-on bag—that way you have it with you in case your luggage becomes lost.
10. Follow local traffic laws
According to the Government of Canada, traffic accidents are the most common cause of death among travellers under the age of 50. Familiarize yourself with the local traffic laws and customs, don’t drive under the influence and don’t get in a vehicle where the driver may appear impaired. And, if you plan to rent a scooter or moped, wear a helmet.
